Thank you to the Officers and Committee for inviting me to judge at their Championship Show today, and to my stewards for doing such a fine job of keeping everything running smoothly. This was my first time awarding CC’s and I felt honoured to be doing so for such a prestigious breed club. Thank you also to all the exhibitors who kindly entered and allowed me to judge their beloved butterflies. Again, an honour. I fell in love with the breed about 30 years ago when I was introduced to the most beautiful little dog I had ever seen (a lovely Motylek girl) and decided there and then that I had to have one. To cut a long story short, I’ve been showing Papillons for many years and during that time have been mentored by one or two stalwarts of the breed who instilled in me a need to keep that type that I first fell for. Correct size, sound construction leading to good movement is, of course, important in a Papillon as are large, rounded, correctly set ears (the signature of the butterfly dog). So too is a single, soft, silky coat with plenty of length. Curtain fringing and profuse tail plume completing the picture. However, I was totally captivated by that heart melting expression and exquisite head and sadly feel we may be in danger of losing this most desirable feature of the breed. It would be such a shame if those new to Papillons never got to see what a true butterfly dog should look like and it would be unbearably sad to only have photos and memories to remind us what exquisite creatures our butterflies can be. Over the last few years I’ve noticed muzzles and legs getting longer and skulls and bodies getting narrower. By no means across the board but nevertheless a trend in that direction. We are the guardians of the breed and I think we owe it to the breeders who came before us to try to keep the pretty, fine, dainty little butterflies that they gave to us. Please, let’s not disappoint them. Jacqueline Hill

Veteran Dog (2 entries 2 absent)

Minor Puppy Dog (3 entries 0 absent)
1st: Buoncasa Zis Levi (Mrs D L Watson) R/S/W Just 6 months. Small and dainty boy with lots of confidence despite his tender age. Nicely balanced proportions and although still very raw, showing lots of promise with especially impressive ears. Lots to like but would hope to see his movement improve as he matures.
2nd: Maliband Lee Cooper to Graycaz (Imp Bel) NAF (Mrs C Lee-Slater) TRI. Bigger than 1 but still a good size for age with the promise of a super coat and furnishings. Nice shape to body with a good reach of neck and lovely ears. Hope to see a tad more leg and tighter front when mature.
3rd: Bankshill Isle of Arran (Susannah Chalmers) TRI. First show for this young man although you would never have known it. A confident boy in every way and as such a credit to his owner. Nicely marked in both head and body with coat and fringing coming. Good ears both set and size. Not quite the head refinement of 1 & 2 but that can come.

Puppy Dog (3 entries 0 absent)
1st: Amicae Master of Arts (Msdms M Whitehill & P Urwin) TRI. Nicely marked with coat and furnishings coming. Lovely, large, well set and already well fringed ears. Moved well both coming and going, the result of a well put together front and rear. A little rangier than my ideal and at the moment a little plain in head but was pleased to see him go BPIS.
2nd: Keomandi Blue Moon Magic (Diane Herbert) TRI. Good length to coat for a puppy and furnishings coming along nicely. Solid head with only a little white to noseband but nonetheless a good shape. Good set to large ears. Level topline with a nice reach of neck and correctly set tail.
3rd: Bankshill Isle of Arran (Susannah Chalmers)

Junior Dog (6 entries 0 absent)
1st: Pappretty Grt Expectations (Christine Anderson) R/S/W. This lightly marked young man has a pleasing outline, was well presented and showed a treat for his handler. Good rear angulation, tailset and carriage and level topline. Lovely ears, dark eyes and good head shape. However, his front could be better.
2nd: Wilachans Goblin King (Jacqueline Green & Carl Cooper) R/S/W. Not much to chose between 1 and 2 but this boy was a little unsettled today although managed to show when needed. He’s nicely marked, correctly put together and moved well. Large correctly set and shaped ears and dark eyes.
3rd: Humpty Dumpty Valery Park in Honrukai (Imp Ukr) (Laura Mandelson) R/S/W Masculine, nicely marked head with dark eye. Well set, large, fringed ears. Nice depth to body with good angulation front and back resulting in good movement. Could have a tad more neck. As always, well presented and handled.

1st: Iotastar’s Brave New World (Ms J D Mowatt & Mr C Mowatt) TRI. Love this wee boy. A real cheeky chappie! Caught my eye as soon as he entered the ring. Lovely type and full of character. Small fine and dainty. Beautiful headpiece with large, rounded well placed ears. Lovely outline. Well coated with curtain fringing and well plumed tail. On the day his front let him down for top awards but so much to like about him.
2nd: Manawyddan Harryhare (M L L & E Anne Griffiths) B/W. Another nice young boy. Different type to 1. but again lots to like. Lovely outline. Nice size and overall balance. Good reach of neck and lay of shoulder. Level topline and well carried tail. Liked the texture and quality of the coat and furnishings. Pleasing, correct head and ears.

Post Graduate Dog (8 entries 0 absent)
1st: Kylecroft Quest (Gillian Breen) TRI. What a wee cracker! Everything about him oozes quality and breed type. So glad he came today. No hesitation awarding him his first CC and then putting him forward for BIS. Loved everything about him, from his perfectly pigmented nose to the tip of his well plumed tail and all in between. Moved soundly. Was presented beautifully. Showed his wee heart out and was as one with his handler. Absolutely lovely! BIS
2nd: Magic Sunrise Brigand with Burghbridge (Imp Lva) (Lindsay Slater) TRI. Good overall construction with sound movement coming and going. Made a nice shape standing. Nicely marked and good length to coat. Stronger in head than 1 but well marked and framed by excellent ears.
3rd: Wilachans Oli (Carl Cooper) TRI. Nice typey dog with a sweet expression and correct head with lovely fringing completing the picture. Put together nicely with good angulation and moved well. Just not showing as consistently as I would have liked. Got that tail back up at just the right time though!

VHC: Pappretty I want a Hero (Christine Anderson)

Limit Dog (12 entries 0 absent -1 transfer)
1st: Iotastar Great Adventure (Ms J D Mowatt & Mr C Mowatt) TRI. Lots to admire. He’s up to size but so typey. Gorgeous head of correct proportions. Beautiful, soft expression. Excellent ears with a huge span and curtain fringing. Profuse coat and tail plume completes the picture. He’s nicely balanced and sound in construction and movement. He wasn’t always standing his best for his handler today especially in the challenge but nonetheless I couldn’t deny him the RDCC.
2nd: Amicae Highland Glen (Gillian Breen) TRI. Unfortunately, a little out of coat today but no denying his quality. Another very typey dog. Absolutely correct head shape and proportions, dark eye with a sweet, heart melting expression. He is well put together with good angulation and lovely straight front. Level topline and good shoulder placement. As always, attentive and at one with his handler.
3rd: Bankshill Chasing Dreams with Abbeyton (Mrs Joan Savage) TRI. Another quality dog in the best class of the day. Eyecatching. Nicely marked. Both sound in construction and movement with good rear angulation and straight front, level topline and correctly set tail. Good head proportions, a dark eye and pleasing expression.

1st: Jorgealin Midnight Magic for Kingshaven (Mandy Keown) TRI. Fine and dainty boy, beautifully presented with a lovely quality of coat. He stood four square and never stopped showing. A good reach of neck into well laid back shoulders, level topline and correctly set tail. Good angulation and straight front. Moved and carried himself well. For me his head lets him down a little.
2nd: Magic Sunrise Ace Ventura (Imp Lva) (Msdms C Lee-Slater & C Kewley) TRI. Bigger type than 1. but a lot to like. Good overall body construction and moved soundly. Large impressive ears framed a well marked head. Just lacked enthusiasm and sparkle today.
3rd: Lafay Petite Etoile JW (Mr A Foynes) R/S/W. Medium size with good overall balance. Stands four square with level topline and good tail set. Good head proportions and moved well. Flagging a little today.
