Papillon Winners

I need a new car! SO grateful to you all, & especially to secretary Wendy Waters, for remaining calm & accommodating (outwardly at least!) and rescheduling events so that my re-scheduled 1pm start was alongside so many of the other complementary events the Club runs from Special Awards ( 50 entered!) to handling & puppy walks & progeny parade. By the time the bitches re-commenced, after their lunch break, we were running in tandem thanks not least to my vastly experienced (NE Toys) stewards.

This Club has been central to my education in judging the Papillon (that commenced with Rogerstone Open on 12/10/74!) not least courtesy of the incomparable Jimmy Simpson so sadly recently lost but who, as ever before, took centre stage (literally) with a glorious framed photo. There was no better mentor. I was given my 1st Open breed show by the Club in 1986 and it was in November 1994 that I was first entrusted with this Club Ch show. I can still picture stopping dead in my tracks, as I viewed LD, in front of an “unknown” exhibitor & her b/w d. who later brought the house down (and slaps on my back from Jimmy!) as I awarded a 1st CC / BIS to Inixia Stylish Stan who never looked back!(12 CCs?).

Wendy was thrilled with today’s entry, as indeed I was, 24 yrs later with an incredible 98, of the 110 dog entries, present.

A Papillon requires “scope” in its structure by which I mean enough neck / length of leg / length of loin as well as facial refinement / high set tail carriage / fine bone / hare feet that combine together to give that dainty Butterfly lightness of foot & balanced freedom that is spellbinding as enhanced by flatly flowing silky coat & fringing. You need this first & foremost, in my view, before turning to details such as narrow blazes / facial symmetry or well broken coat markings.

This was the 2nd N & E Club Ch show of this year as it was the Club’s turn to host the one extra set of CCs that are available. It was truly a celebration / a party that took your breath away & was in the best tradition of a Northern Working Mens Club venue with free bacon butty & a brew on arrival; the gentlemen of the Committee dressed as bouncers; no mirror (to check your hair) in the gents; spot prizes, announced over the mike, all day; background music; glitter & Christmassy glam; hot grub; cake (and fizz); raffles . . and so it went on and on. THIS is the way to attract & keep your support in the dog game as acknowledged by the ever glamorous & apparently ageless President, Queenie Bruce, as she made a huge floral presentation of thanks to Wendy who had dedicated herself all year to the task and who explained to me that THIS Joint Ch show was the Club giving something back to its exhibitor supporters & members who, in turn, responded with 173 exhibits making 269 entries!

My specialist co-judge Estelle Kirk & I had no difficulty in settling any differences so as to arrive at unanimous joint decisions & we broke a little with tradition by inviting redundant referee Norma Inglis to actually present the chosen awards on our behalves.

I will leave Estelle to critique her own bitch exhibits & simply explain that I backed the b. for BIS as I found her to be that touch “scopier” & flowing, albeit the d. had the better tail carriage.

I backed the d. for BPIS because he DID have that scope (as did the gorgeous baby b) but clearly had the advantage of maturity & “finish”.
DOGS:Please read “r/w” as incorporating all shades of sabling where appropriate.

Minor Puppy Dog (13 entries, 3 absent)
To my mind this was THE most competitive class of the day, with many potential future Champions, so if I missed yours from the final cut then you may yet have the last laugh!
1st: (Mary Whitehill & Pat Urwin) Amicae Timeless Dream 6m b/w of such “timeless” quality & he was so “bang on” secure as to keep him in front; ideal size & shape; lovely face with his eyes, ears & refined muzzle; fine bone; gd neck, angles & topline; fine bone; hare feet; such an exciting prospect.
2nd: Mrs S Stanbury) Inixia Trademark 6m r/w & certainly a typically worthy representative of his breeding; gd skull with gloriously set ears; touch shorter muzzled; ex structure & body proportions; fabulous front; less firm as yet behind; gd neck & topline leading to a well set & carried tail; a stylish, scopy baby with an assured future.
3rd: (Louise Brown) Zoloto Lucky Winner 8m tri; another of absolute quality; lovely head with eye, muzzle & ears all correctly positioned; firm front; well put together; simply less forward that maturity should sort so as to prove he was well named.
Res: (Donna Marie Dunn) Sweetbriar Double Shot
VHC: (Mr P & Mrs J A Hill) Cariadeas The Firebird

Puppy Dog (9 entries, 0 absent)
And yet more with real potential.
1st: (Mrs C Lee-Slater & Mrs C Kewley) Magic Sunrise Ace Ventura (Imp LVA) 10m tri & I do hope it didn’t show that I was positively “drooling”; all is where you want it; will have stopped growing now, ready to fill his enviably elegant frame; superb headpiece; dark eye; mobile ears; fine muzzle; a neck that gives him a proud carriage; long, high tail arched over his back; soundly secure with a light, ground-covering action; as the adult classes progressed, so he was still in my mind as THE one to beat; his title is a certainty & I will be able to say it all began here today! BPD; Reserve Dog CC & BPIS
2nd: (Mr T R & Mrs C Headley) Yeldaeh Simply Red 10m r/w; another stunner; beautiful head & ears; enviable hare feet on fine bone; strikingly coated; ex tailset & carriage; well constructed & angulated with great neckline; absolutely sound; simply less mature & when that is sorted, he too will be right up there chasing his title.
3rd: (Jane Thompson & Sandra Austin) Melangel Highland by Design at Jhanakia 11m b/w; abundantly coated but not so as to detract from his quality & style; gd headpiece with well placed eye; ears could have been a touch more set back & oblique; well constructed with an ex rear where he moved both positive & true; another with the world at his hare feet.
Res: (Louise Brown) Zoloto Lucky Winner
VHC: (Mrs Rosemarie Hobson) Amicae Kenzo at Rosenjon

Junior Dog (10 entries, 1 absent)
1st: (Miss Sophie Langdon) Skyvana Van Helsing 14m r/w; correctly rounded skull; well set ears; large, dark eye; defined stop; perfect size & ex structure; gd in rib & topline; ideal length; balanced mover on ex feet; ex tail carriage; soundly alert to all around to give not only an engaging performance today but to indicate he too will be in the reckoning upon full maturity.
2nd: (Elizabeth & Karen Anderson) Northlyte Spirit of the Isle 12m tri & another with an assured future & showing off his enviable tan markings; ex headpiece; gd in rib; well proportioned body; light & sound on fine boned legs & gd feet; pushed all the way as am sure he will continue to do as he moves into senior competition.
3rd: (Mr Peter Crower) Buoncasa Elf on the Shelf 10m tri whose handler can have every confidence in as he gained in stature through the day; classically, brilliantly marked & beautifully headed, scoring in eye & ear; has some scope about him with gd neck & tail carriage so will never coarsen; free, light mover; not one that will be “left” on the shelf as has plenty of winning ahead of him.
Res: (Mrs S Stanbury) Inixia Fully Charged
VHC: (Mrs L Morton) Ablazzor King of Spades

Yearling Dog (8 entries, 1 absent)
1st: (Susan Lanson) Cantoverde Captain Casper 18m tri; litter brother of Res Bitch CC; gorgeous head enhanced by blaze & correctly set, mobile & heavily fringed ears; gd in neck, rib & topline; correct length gave him balance; well set & carried tail; light & free on the move, albeit can still settle a tad more in front; youngster of such exquisite type & quality as to have Ch potential.
2nd: (M LL & E Anne Griffiths) Manawyddan Victor Hugo 13m b/w; stylish & scopy but understandably more raw; relatively short & thick through muzzle & needs time to firm at pastern; excels in neck & a backline of correct length; has much winning to look forward to.
3rd: (Ms J D Ramsey & Mr C J Mowatt) Iotastar’s Brave New World rising 2yrs; colour not noted; smart & showy; gd basic structure; ex tailset off a level back; light mover; rather a small eye & rather too much taper to muzzle . . . even for me!
Res: (Miss E Patrick) Volepecula Tesseract

Novice Dog (3 entries, 0 absent)
1st: (Mrs Rosemarie Hobson) Amicae Kenzo at Rosenjon 10m r/w who was VHC in strong PD where he performed intermittently but he found his hare feet here; loved his scopy outline & refinement; lovely headpiece with ex eye & ears; firm at elbow; level; correct proportions all through; prefer more “lift” to his tail carriage; light & true on the move; has the quality & style to hold his own as he matures.
2nd: (Miss W Waters) Sweetbriar a Harlequin 9m r/w; a baby with so much to like once his bite sorts out; excels in eye & ears; ex shape from gd bodylines; level & stylish; light & free moving, albeit maturity will settle him in front.
3rd: (Miss M Moss) Delphlands Lord Boycie 12m b/w; rather too dainty; pretty headed & full of character; gd eye & well placed & used ears; gd in neck & topline; needs time both to develop in body & to firm in movement that is currently erratic.

Graduate Dog (7 entries, 1 absent)
1st: (Miss E L Morley & Mr R Hitchcock) Elfuago Bombastic 2.5yrs tri of all Lafford breeding; so secure in body & movement; nothing worth changing beyond added maturity & “finish”; ideal size; gd in head proportions with a rounded skull, well defined stop & dark, round eye; mobile ears; level; gd in rib; gd carriage all round to move not only true but light & balanced on hare feet & fine bone; exhibited to advantage & will readily move up the ranks to take on the best.
2nd: (Carol Lees) Lafford Fireman Sam 2yrs tri; so much to like as he exudes breed type; correct head features & proportions; large & well set ears; his neck & backline give him a certain style; gd tail carriage; firm off his hocks but a bit careless in front; another one set to rise through the ranks & hold his own.
3rd: (Mrs S Stanbury) Inixia Ever Ready Eddie 15m r/w giving lots of age away & needing to coat up; truly lovely head & eye; level topline; correct body length into a gd tail carriage; a little straight through forehand.
Res: (Miss M C Waller) Lilnrose I’m a Lovebug JW
VHC: (Mrs Valerie Lockhart) Chetrude Dark Secret

Post Graduate Dog (13 entries, 1 absent)
Really good class.
1st: (Mrs S Stanbury) Inixia Fine Fella just on 2yrs b/w half-brother to 3rd in GD; exudes type & style; super head & eye; large, well placed ears; gd neck & topline; gd in rib; firm loin of correct length into a well set & carried tail; soundly balanced, so as to cover the ground, on the move; destined to reach the top.
2nd: (Miss S Orchard) Panspayon Eye of the Storm newly turned 2yrs b/w; indeed just 3 days between these two; bigger & heavier in build yet loses nothing in type; rounded skull; large round eye; fine muzzle; gd in rib & topline; went well with balance & light freedom.
3rd: (Mandy Keown) Jorgealin Midnight Magic for Kingshaven 2.5yrs strikingly dark sable; full brother of the BIS; such quality; loved his expressive face through his eyes & large mobile ears; fine bone; hare feet; correct length; well ribbed; smartly sound; flat tail carriage detracted; wouldn’t mind investing in his stud dog value however!
Res: (Miss E Patrick) Volepecula The Early Bird
VHC: (Mrs G A Geary) Taliesyn Black Walnut

Limit Dog (20 entries, 2 absent)
Breathtaking, if daunting, as I turned to see this array of talent and a 2nd cut of top quality would have been easy to achieve, This is why we need Grading so that each & every exhibit would have left the ring with my basic assessment and banish any thoughts of having been “thrown out with the rubbish”.
1st: (Mr M G & Mrs E Davidson) Northlyte Genesis of Elmaraine NAF TAF rising 4yrs tri; absolute quality; super shape & scopy style as aided by his neck, his length of loin & his tail carriage; lovely headpiece with correctly placed, large mobile ears; enviable feet; silky, well fringed, coat; soundly balanced on the move; worth a Ch title.
2nd: (Mrs A Boughton & Mrs S Stanbury) Inixia Follower of Fashion 2yrs b/w litter brother of PGD winner; super headed through eye & ear with defined stop & refined muzzle; gd neck & topline; has desired length; clean front; fine coat; light, true mover; can still mature on to then gain his title.
3rd: (Mrs L George-Evans & Miss E Morley) Elfuago a New Adventure 3yrs tri; full brother of GD winner; desirably dainty & still relatively raw, yet so typy in outline courtesy of his ears, neck, topline & tail carriage; well constructed; wonderfully light & free-flowing on the move.
Res: (Mrs Jeni Wiggins) Rozamie Monsieur Arther for Scapafield JW
VHC: (Mr A May & Mrs C Foynes) Lafay Petite Etoile JW

Open Dog (12 entries, 0 absent)
So competitive, right along the line up.
1st: (Miss J S King) Skyvana Tom Thumb Sarasha JW 2yrs tri; half-brother to JD winner; “dainty” as expressly required by the standard; typy & of ex conformation; most attractive head with rounded skull, well placed ear & medium, dark eye; balanced angles; gd neck & topline; firm loin of correct length to balance him out; gd tailset & carriage; he was THE outstandingly sound mover of the dog classes as it was positive, parallel & unrestricted; appeared between coats so as to lack “finish”.
2nd: (Jane Thompson & Sandra Austin) Melangel Highland Vogue at Jhanakia 4.4yrs r/w; took my eye on my initial look around; scopy; refined; expressive face with a super eye; large, mobile ears; gd neck into a clean front; gd in rib; length through loin; fine silky coat; tailset proved to be a little low; light, ground-covering, action; would have expected to find an exhibit of this quality, and maturity, to be titled.
3rd: (Mr M G & Mrs E Davidson) Rozamie Roberto of Elmaraine rising 3yrs b/w of true breed type; gd in skull, stop & muzzle with superb ears; firmly bodied through rib & loin yet still fine boned; hare feet; another I would have graded as of CC quality.
Res: (Mr AK & Mrs EA Bartram) Tresor’s Kings Valiant Lancelot (Imp USA)
VHC: (Mrs C M Kewley) Graycaz Chil your Boots

Champion Dog (2 entries, 0 absent)
So THIS is where they were hiding!
1st: (Miss K F Miller & Mr E L Ryan) Ch Feolig Smarty Pants JS SHCM 3.5yrs r/w; v “Butterfly” in type, size, character & style; outstanding head type; ex eye & pigment; refined in muzzle; gd neck & topline; ex conformation with balanced angles; gd in spring of rib & strength of loin; ex tailset & carriage; immaculate, flat, flowing silky coat; sound moving that is light & parallel, albeit a little exaggerated in front.
2nd: (Elizabeth Anderson) Ch Frasermar Storm in the Snow 4,5yrs tri with striking markings; half- brother of LD winner; heavier built d. with a shorter, thicker muzzle but still has scope & style; super skull, eye & ears; fabulous coat & fringing also immaculately turned out; level; ex tail carriage; hare feet; ground-covering, true movement.

Special Beginners Dog (3 entries,1 absent)
1st: (Mrs J L Green) Giramondo Von Jorgealin rising 3yrs r/w; unplaced in PGD; handsome headed & richly pigmented; dark, round eye & large, heavily fringed ears; gd overall structure; level; correct length; firm rear with a gd profile; somewhat overbuilt so as to come on rather wide.
2nd: (Miss M Moss) Delphlands Lord Boycie

Special Phalene Open Dog (3 entries, 1 absent)
1st: (Mrs K Maskell & Miss M C Waller) Lilnrose Ears Looking at you Kazkell just turned 2yrs r/w; scopy chap of quality; beautifully refined in head with correctly dropped ears; gd in skull & eye; level & of correct length; gd tailset & carriage; flat, silky coat; light, positive mover if a bit careless in front; needs no “Special” concession to more than hold his own against those peers that hold them erect. Best I leave it there!! BPhIS. He wins this judge’s much coveted Best Name In Show Judges award too!! The Lifetime Award is still held by the late, much lamented, Gloucestershire Pomeranian breeder Mary Larrassey who (and this is topical) managed to get past the KC Registrations her singleton d puppy born 5th November, Warleggan For Fawkes Sake!
2nd: (Miss M Moss) Royal Razzle Dazzle Them TAF rising 11m b/w; unplaced in PD; v raw but smart & active; gd in head, ear & overall shape; needs to continue to come up on the leg, so as to balance out with his body length, & to firm up in action fore & aft;

Veteran Dog (10 entries, 2 absent)
Wonderful class to finish that made sure I had no “easy ride” right to the end.
1st: (Jane Thompson & Sandra Austin) Jhanakia Highland Desiny 11yrs 2m r/w; oozes breed type; scopy, sound & stylish; fabulous face; lovely eye; beautifully set & fringed ears; in apparently ageless body condition; excels in rib; long, strong loin; gd tail carriage; so light & free on the move on his fine bone & hare feet; frankly, he should have been titled. BVIS
2nd: (Connie Letch) Conysluck Master Pip 9yrs 10m r/w; absolutely lovely; true to specific breed type; beautifully headed; defined stop; ex eye & ears; well bodied; enviable hare feet; silky coat; sound & showy with alert carriage; CC quality.
3rd: (Catriona Nolan) Abbeyton Here we go Again for Loerburn 10yrs 10m tri; another of ex type & conformation; scores in head as much as in bodyshape; immaculately turned out; light & free flowing movement; would have graded as CC quality ( and others).
